Sketch and Draw

Sketch and draw, what it's all about . . .

A sketch book full of interesting sketches, notes and color ideas is the foundations to a great drawing or painting.

Many artists return time after time to the some location. They sketch, draw, look, consider and take photographs. Slowly they absorb what they are sketching but also experiencing. Then they begin to create. To paint. The painting becomes an extension of themselves. It is an expression of all they saw and felt and considered.

This sketch shows a quick tonal study. The artist is beginning to explore a small part of a Yorkshire valley. They are beginning to consider composition. This is one sketch out of several. Put together with photographs, and any quick colour studies, the artist can now begin to create a drawing or painting.
